Day 1: Auckland – Matamata - Rotorua

Two hours south of Auckland lies the lush farmland of the Hamilton - Waikato region. Famous for dairying and fine thoroughbred horses, it's easy to see why these green pastures and rolling hills were chosen to portray Hobbiton and The Shire. Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the undeniable beauty of the land, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance.

Rotorua is known for bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and natural hot springs, and showcasing our fascinating Maori culture. Sitting within the Pacific Rim of Fire, Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland. Get close to spectacular geysers and colourful crater lakes, relax in a mud bath or enjoy a simple soak in natural hot steam. The region has one of the world's most active geothermal fields. The unforgettable smell of sulphur, clouds of smoke and volcanic activity are a natural part of life in Rotorua.

Rotorua's beautiful lakes, rivers and forests offer an abundance of outdoor activities for you all year round. The multiple running, mountain biking, and water-based events ensure these natural gems are maintained to a world-class standard. In addition, there is an abundance of family-friendly activities available in Rotorua, from light adventure to wildlife encounters and cultural experiences, making this city the perfect holiday destination for everyone.

Accommodation: Rotorua or Lake Taupo

Day 2: Rotorua - Private Boat trip to Mokoia Island

Experience beauty and history like no other on Mokoia Island. Located in the middle of Lake Rotorua, Mokoia Island is the site of one of our country's most famous love stories and the home of some of our most notorious Maori warriors and tribes. All tours to the Island are accompanied by experienced tour guides that walk you through the island's birdlife, wildlife, cultural events, history and geography. This is one of the area's most unique experiences, made even more exciting with the addition of the jet boat ride (or boat) to and from the Island. Experience a traditional Māori greeting and dance!

If you want to see New Zealand never like before and experience an ancient forest up close and personal, then this Canopy tour is for you! There are over 200m of thrilling zip lines, swing bridges and treetop platforms, all within an expansive forest network of towering ancient trees.

Accommodation: Rotorua or Lake Taupo

Day 3: Rotorua - Flight to White Island

White Island is New Zealand’s only permanently active volcano. Take a scenic helicopter flight to the island and enjoy views of the crater before landing and taking a hike over the crater floor to view active steam vents.

Explore the sparkling waters and hidden gems of picturesque Lake Rotoiti with a private charter and discover beautiful sandy coves, lake edge hot springs and cultural sites. Your skipper and host will recite stories of the lake, its history and the local indigenous Maori people. In addition, guests can choose to soak in the rejuvenating Manupirua lakeside hot pools. Cruises can be tailored to your requirements and duration, with a usual charter taking 3-4 hours. Only accessible by boat, the Manupirua Hot Springs on the edge of the lake provide a beautifully tranquil setting to soak in the rejuvenating thermal mineral water. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Rotoiti and picnic on the shore.

Or:  Lake Rotoiti is a beautiful deep lake that consistently produces trophy-sized trout throughout the year providing quality fishing suitable for all methods and skill levels. The northern shoreline is bush clad and features cliffs rising directly from the water. This section is only suited to boat fishing. The southern areas offer a range of angling opportunities for fly-fishing from the shore.

Accommodation: Rotorua or Lake Taupo

Day 4: Lake Taupo – Domestic flight to Nelson

Nelson is a lifestyle; that's the best way to describe it. Situated at the top northwest of the South Island, it is the sunniest region in New Zealand. Nelson's diverse geography captures everything from the long golden beaches to untouched forests and rugged mountains. Perhaps it's the sun or the location, but Nelson has long been a magnet for creative people. More than 350 working artists and craftspeople live in the area, traditional, contemporary and Maori. Visit their studios and find a unique piece to take home with you. Sit in the sun, sip a wine from one of the local vineyards, and dine on the famous Nelson Bay scallops.

Accommodation: Nelson or Abel Tasman

Day 5: Nelson - Private charter in Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's smallest national park- but it's perfectly formed for relaxation and adventure. Get a taste of all the Abel Tasman has to offer from the comfort of an Abel Tasman Charters' boat. You can decide to stay on board and relax or take one of the kayaks for a paddle. Go for a swim, snorkel over the marine reserve, or be dropped off for a bush walk. Enjoy a delicious lunch, and then do it all again.

If you only have one day to explore the Abel Tasman National Park, spend it on a private charter vessel. Enjoy a scenic cruise, swim, kayak and walk some of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. Let knowledgeable skippers show you the unique history, ecology and wildlife of New Zealand's Abel Tasman. Or relax on board and enjoy the views. Inviting sandy beaches to fill the spaces between trees and the tide line. Crystal-clear streams tumble down mossy valleys to join the ocean. Granite and marble formations fringe the headlands, cloaked in regenerating native forests. Native wildlife is an essential part of the scenery. Tui and bellbird song fills the forest; shags (cormorants), gannets and little blue penguins dive for dinner; fur seals lounge on the rocks around the edge of Tonga Island.

Accommodation: Nelson or Abel Tasman

Day 6: Nelson/Abel Tasman (Day to your own leisure)

The Nelson Tasman region is a safe and family-friendly destination. The area is also cycling-friendly for mountain bikers and recreational riders of all ages. So cycle along the Rocks Road and challenge yourself with the new Tasman Cycleways track. Nelson/Tasman is blessed with creative abundance and is home to over 350 working artists. The diverse art forms range from paintings to ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewellery and wearable art. The region is conducive to creativity for many reasons. Its physical charms include turquoise lagoons and golden sand beaches, sun-kissed produce from groves and bays, and rich light, courtesy of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand.

Or: Helicopter to Mt Owen, at the southern end of the Kahurangi National Park, we will view the film sites from The Lord of the Rings and The Fellowship of the Ring, where the depleted Fellowship were filmed escaping from the horrors of Moria. Flying through to Mt Olympus, appropriately named with its rocky outcrops twisted and cracked into unbelievable columnar shapes sprouting from the side of the mountain, we view where the Fellowship hid from Saruman’s Crebain. We then fly to Canaan Downs, where the Hobbits are led by Aragorn, into the Chetwood Forest northeast of Bree.

Accommodation: Nelson – Resurgence Lodge, Stonefly Lodge (Luxury), Split Apple Retreat (Superior)

Day 7: Nelson – Domestic flight to Queenstown

Queenstown is one of New Zealand's top visitor destinations; if you come to the region, you'll understand why. The town sits on the shore of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu amidst dramatic mountain ranges; this stunning location will blow you away. Queenstown is suited to all kinds of adventures – especially throughout summer. Activities like paragliding, Zip lining, 4WD Driving, and kayaking are the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. However, if adventure isn't your thing and you need time to kick back and relax, plenty of rejuvenating experiences are available. Treat yourself to some boutique shopping, and experience excellent local food and wine.

An unmissable journey into the Dart River Valley, where myth, heritage and fantasy come to life. The Dart River Wilderness Jet is an exhilarating and spectacular journey deep into the heart of the world-renowned Mt Aspiring National Park. This rich and diverse landscape offers a unique combination of breathtaking scenery, compelling experiences and New Zealand's most exciting jet boating along glacier-fed rivers. Our professional and highly trained staff will guide you along your journey, sharing stories of the area's incredible history, great Maori legends and Greenstone trail. Day 8: Queenstown – Scenic flight to Fiordland National Park

Today you are taking a flight/cruise excursion into Milford Sound, described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘eighth wonder of the world”, which was carved out during successive ice ages and, at its deepest point off Mitre Peak, plunges to a depth of 265 meters. The extraordinary splendour of this region is unsurpassed anywhere else in the world, a bold claim in a country that offers great beauty around every corner. You depart from Queenstown airport and enjoy spectacular views as you fly over the Fiordland National Park. You land at Milford Sound, where you board your launch cruise, which travels the entire length of Milford Sound. Your return flight to Queenstown takes you via the famous Sutherland Falls and the glaciers of the Fiordland National Park. Late afternoon settle into your small boutique stay and enjoy the area's spectacular views.

Day 9: Queenstown - Skippers Canyon Rafting

Family raft the upper reaches of the famous Shotover River, Queenstown. Our trip is suitable for everyone from 3 years old as we only raft on gentle grade 1 & 2 rapids. Water confidence is not necessary. We offer a unique sightseeing trip by bus into the famous Skippers Canyon - possibly the most spectacular drive in New Zealand! The views are astounding, and the area is jam-packed with history. We get even further into the backcountry as we float by raft on the Upper Shotover River. You may recognise our put-in-point as "The Ford of Bruinen" from the Lord of The Rings movie!

Or: Take a horse trek with a view! Climb high over the Moonlight Valley passing historical Gold Mining sites (try to spot the old stone cottages among the landscape), Like going back in time to when the primary mode of transport was on horseback. Multiple river crossings on the way back down the canyon, with ample opportunity to go for a canter.

Accommodation: Queenstown – Queenstown Park Hotel, Eichardt's Hotel, Matakauri Lodge or Blanket Bay Lodge (Superior)

Day 10: Queenstown - Day trip to Lake Wanaka

Forty-five kilometres long and covering 193 square kilometres, the crystal clear waters of Lake Wanaka are perfect for jet boaters, sailors and kayakers to explore. Nestled below towering mountains, Wanaka is the most tranquilly set of the South Island lakes and is much more than a winter destination. Year-round activities include fishing, hiking, canyoning, climbing and skydiving.

Excavated by massive glaciers more than 10,000 years ago, Lakes Wanaka and Hawea lie side by side. At a sliver of land known as The Neck, which is just 1000 metres wide, the glaciers were once joined. Lake Wanaka is the source of New Zealand's largest river, the Clutha.

Or: Experience New Zealand's most authentic 4WD high country adventure. The perfect mix of incredible scenery, history, heritage and farming life. This will be a genuine highlight of your New Zealand holiday. Explore remote and seldom travelled back roads of an authentic New Zealand High Country farm overlooking sparkling Lake Wanaka. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, glaciers and wild river valleys, you'll see farm animals, including Red Deer, cattle and sheep, up close and in their natural environment. Visit historical sites and experience what life was like for Wanaka's first farmers. Enjoy two walks through pristine alpine meadows and ancient lakeside forests. This journey offers a unique insight into Wanaka's rich history, heritage, modern-day farming life and breathtaking scenery.
